    Obituary for Depression

Unable to be guided from the darkness
From the sooty, unholy, gloomy Stygian
It saddens us but Depression has
Reduced itself into a cloaked smidgeon

Leaving behind a trail of disappointments
Rusty dreams and deeply blackened hopes
We are yet to learn how to move on without it
While time with our effervescence elopes

    Depression was the unwanted child
    Of extreme sadness and despair
In these times we look to your compassion for it
To come forward and help us share

The unbearable grief and insurmountable pain
So that on this sabbath eve we can convene
To say goodbye to our dear old friend
As the afternoon clock chimes twelve fifteen

In its lifetime Depression never said never
Clung to every last shred of aspiration
Death for it is but the start of another life
In another realm with better expectations

    Victoria the great
Queen of England and head of state
Inspired a revolution for women across the world
When in 1997 a lingerie company in her name was unfurled

    Queen Victoria,
    The last Empress of India
Became a muse for designs in leather, lace and fur
Which long after her death would’ve still scandalised her

Queen Victoria, the grandmother of Europe
Whose fashion history included a virginal white bridal get up
Is now fraught with the secrets her clothing held inside
That ironically for generations will serve as a guide

    Pet Peeves

For a daughter born to two surgeons
I’ve relatively managed to remain sane
But beating the genes is difficult
And living life without being given lame names

While dirt and unwashed palms are commonplace
My nemesis remain the invisible germs
The very thought of filth soiling my system
Makes me shiver with fright and internally squirm

From people sneezing into their hands
And afterwards their inability to sanitise
To them double dipping chips and veggies
And collective sharing of lollies and popsicles of ice

Disgusted I share neither chips nor crackers
Only god knows where others fingers have been
Even if not sharing is considered rude
I find germ infested hands a bigger sin

Falling sick was frowned upon at home
As a child I was healthy as a horse
And taught to soap my palms frequently
And continue school without a pause

I often wonder when I caught the bug
Of feeling like everyone has Macbeth’s hands
My friends laugh and poke fun at me
While my family my OCD quietly withstands

The house help whisper behind my back when
I pester them as they try to cook
My inability to turn a blind eye to mucky palms
Often leaves me troubled and shook

I feel a sudden welling of bile in my throat
And my brain stops functioning altogether
The very thought of being given grubby food
Makes my whole system with dread quiver

I would thank Covid 19 for having forced
People to become aware about washing their hands
    And sanitising their soiled palms
As frequently as they possibly can

I’m proud to say my home has had no difficulty
In coping with this added stress in these tough times
I’ve been troubling them individually for so long now
To them this trying circumstance feels just fine

    Love at first sight

I fell in love with you long ago
A love that’s lasted through space and time
Your leathery smell makes me weak at the knees
So does your leathery gleaming shine

I love way you make me feel tall
God knows I need that boost —
I love the way I feel when I have you on
For years under your spell I’ve lived seduced

Your shiny belts and buckles combine
To make you a piece of art
The money I’ve spent in this lifetime on you —
No one would mistaken me for being smart

Long has lived my one sided love affair with you
Not that the difference you would ever know
So help me god and break this spell
Instead of shoes , help me find a beau

    New year resolution

I stand aside and watch as the year
    Goes swishing by
Unable to stick to a resolution no matter
    How hard I try
Promises of health, wealth and balanced
    Constitution seem dry
False bravado and fake love, make making
    A resolution go awry
Thoughts of becoming a better person
    Seem spry
I think self control for me is short in supply
However much an effort I do apply
All logic do my failures defy
What is the point of making resolutions
That leave one high and dry
Rather than starve, I’d much rather eat
    An apple pie
On my better judgement I’d like to rely
Instead of needing to my every move clarify
I feel great are those people who by rules
    Can comply
    Creating barriers, making roadblocks and
    Restrictions apply
To one’s happiness and natural state
    Saying goodbye
Resolutions may serve others well, but are a
    Pain for me, say I

    Some like it hot

After a bad Friday at work
    And anxiety I couldn't feign
I decided to go to a cafe and have
A cup of joe to soothe the pain

    Across my table he sat
With a steaming cup of coffee
    Engrossed in solving a puzzle
    Sipping on his caramel toffee

With steaming cup in my hands
I was absorbed in my thoughts
When suddenly our eyes met across the room
And my heart jolted to a stop

The dark hair on his head
    Shielded most of his face
For he had piercing black eyes
    Like a raven’s wing, a black gaze

    He stared at me searchingly
    For answers that were untold
It felt like a lightning bolt
    Had suddenly stripped my soul

    He examined me thoroughly
    Going from head to toe
It felt like I was being examined
Like a lion examines a doe

It was as though he could
    Literally see into my soul
And while I sat fully clothed
Never so unveiled had I felt before

As he slowly got up and
    Neatly folded his newspaper
I felt my heart jump outside of me
As he calmly, to my table walked over

Long and lean, elegant and clean
He wore an overcoat in sable
I felt I was in no condition to talk
    He'd made me so unstable

    "Excuse me" he said
While knots formed in my tummy
“Are these chairs taken or can I
Borrow them for my kids and their mummy?”

    Defective

I have all the necessary appendages
Two eyes, ten fingers and cute little toes
Yet I am unable to make my peace
With my prominent lump of a nose

Seemingly thinning hair and wrinkling skin
Keep me worried all the time
I frown and wonder what is wrong when
People say they love my dimples and smile

A short, barely perceptible neck holds my head
Stumpy arms make it impossible to reach high
For a very long time my short hair made
People think I was a weird looking guy

Part of my height was donated to my sister
Who now stands over a foot above me
Blessed with almost hazel large myopic eyes
Things at a distance I can barely see

Prone to stomach aches and a sore throat
I neither live to eat nor sing
A broken foot from a decade ago still hurts
And swelling in my ankle brings

With a penchant for dark body ink
I’ve turned myself into an artists canvas
From mottos to photos and slogans
A large part of me they encompass

My prettiest feature I’m yet to discover
All of me just seems unruly and uncouth
My body was meant to be a temple
Which I clearly finished raiding in my youth

    Adventure

    I am a bookworm
    Both fat and round
    I’m leafy green in color
And live to put on more pounds

    Whenever I am hungry
The next door book I mount
    While the fans twirl noisily
No one hears the munching sound

    Everyday is an adventure
    Of grand planned tours
Of train trips and sinking ships
    Or of history galore!

Many a sob story I’ve eaten
    Many a broken heart defiled
    Several pages I have munched
Of stories of blood bonded ties!

    My favourite section is drama
Where the great sagas are stored
And I can hog to my heart’s content
    And make a hundred holes

    Physics, science and chemistry
    Are no fun for me
    Their glossy stiff pages
    Make a shabby meal

    Newsprints are more friendly
    To visit everyday I’m told
Apparently no one cares for them
If they get more than a day old!

    My lavish life of comfort
    Is one of endless possibilities
And my in between travelling is comfy
As I reside in the city library!

If you do ever spot me
    Kindly restrain a scream….
Remember to return the books on time
You could be reading my next meal !

    Cat and mouse

“Yours is such a long tale “
Said the cat while talking to the door mouse
“Yes indeed it is a long tail “, he said
“It has been in a bed of flour
    But somehow still looks red”.

“Red? What tale are you talking about ?”
Said the cat gently licking its paw
“My long tail that you were talking about,
It has been looking rather raw”.

“It seems to me there are a few screws
Loose in that warped brain of yours.
You seem to have lost your head while
Trying to put on that pair of drawers”.

“Pair of drawers! I was born in a drawer
On the second floor bedroom of this house”.
Indignantly huffed and frustrated with the cat
Said the little but mighty door mouse.

“Born in a drawer? Indeed you’ve lost your head
I knew something was terribly wrong …..
When one fine day you decided to dress up
And appear all spruced up in a new form”.

“What a shiny coat you have sir”, you expected me to say
As if I’d ever let that slip out if my mouth “.
“I do have a silky, shiny coat”, stroking his smooth stomach
Said the flattered door mouse .

“Silky, shiny no matter what you wear
You will always remain a nobody here.
They love me to bits in this house besides
It is me you need to fear”.

“Why would I fear you Tinkle Bell,
You are after all such a doll.
You are cushiony and plush and jolly
Of white snow a huge ball”.

“Tinkle Bell ! Tinkle Bell ! Don’t you dare
Call me anything else but Sir “,
“Who would have thought a little rodent
Like you would address me as a ball of fur?”

“I have a red tail and you are a fur ball
Aren’t we a pair to be seen ?
I think it is high time you start being sweet
And for tiny things stop being so mean “.

    7 day journal

I woke up with a scowl
Knowingly since it was a Monday
And spent the day at work and
    The eve cooking pasta flambé
I tucked a napkin under my chin
And ate my dinner alone on a tray

The sun was brighter the next day
    Now that Tuesday was here
A lousy day at work resulted in me
Being mildly excited about the pan sear
Chicken breast I made to lift my spirits
While keeping my hairy little dog near

I woke up earlier than usual
Perkier than most days on Wednesday
    Spent the morning working happily
And then came home to carefully weigh
Each ingredient for a chocolate cake
That I iced in sleepy shades of grey

Mid week laziness hit me hard
    On Thursday this week
So I decided to let the ingredients marinate
For making yummy kebabs on seekh
The day at work was better because I knew
I’d come home and make a dinner sleek

Thank god it was finally Friday
I practically hopped and skipped to work
I was calm and collected while working
    And not going completely berserk
    I decided on making Fischbrötchen
The humble fish roll snack from Hamburg

The sun was streaming in through my window
By the time on Saturday I awoke
Spent the day cleaning and doing puzzles
And enjoyed several cans of coke
I made myself tasty tacos using
    The beans I’d previously soaked

My favourite day of the week was here
Sunday arrived to put a smile on my face
I spent time cleaning the kitchen after spending
The morning at church saying grace
I treated myself to a lasagna and happily sighed
While putting back the washed plates

Before I knew it the week was done
And tomorrow it would be back to business again
I’m happy to be ending this weeks report today
After having cut veggies in juliennes
I will make the next week better at work
Even if it takes chinese food to reach zen

    Lovely

The way the moonlight creates a halo
Gently around your lovely furry face
Makes me want to stay forever by your side
Keep my paws with yours interlaced
    Your gentle mewing and purring
Melts my heart from the inside
You never cease to amaze me
Neither does your smooth raven hide
Promise me my love the next time
The moon is full and bright
We will share a quiet evening in unison
Filled with togetherness, love and mice

    Peace

The constant tussle of the demons
In my head rarely ever ends
Through all the voices in there
    My thoughts often bend
    Towards the way they desire
    While building up feelings inside
That makes me want to run away
    Or get scared and hide.
As though I am a bird chained
Being forced to stay forever caged
What is mine, what is theirs after a while
I find very difficult to gauge
    The troubled times never cease
Forever there is strife , a war
The tranquility of silence is a rarity
Because every whisper is turned into a roar
    The discord and agitation slowly
Turns into disagreements in my head
    Leaving no stone unturned
    Or anything ugly unsaid.
Instead of the soothing arms of
    Repose, quiet and placidity
I’m transported to a place of
    Disturbance, unrest and anxiety.
I wonder if there will ever come
A day when I will be spared
From the constant discourse and conversation
    That leaves me scared .
I await a calm day of stillness,
    Steady serenity and peace
When all the chatter in my head comes to an end
And all the ugliness shall cease.

    London

    Where would you venture
If you could live anywhere in the world ?
For me it would be London
Where the British flag flies proudly unfurled

    From the lavish Buckingham Palace
To the bargains in Camden Market
Sightings at the historic Tower of London
To the fruit and veg in Borough Market

From watching the greens in Hyde Park
To taking a cruise on the Thames
    Or visiting Cambridge or Oxford
To discuss my career and aims

Watching the Tower Bridge of London
Being raised to let river traffic pass
    Visiting “time” in quaint Greenwich
Or attending St. Paul’s Sunday mass

In Victoria and Albert Museum viewing
Art, history and various sculptures tall
Enjoying afternoon tea in British Museum
Or walking down Natural History Museum’s iconic halls

Going to visit Madonna at Madame Tussaud’s
And locating some fish and chips to eat
Or dropping in to meet Sherlock Holmes
    At 221 B, Baker Street

Maybe pave the way to Kings Cross Station
And visit platform nine and three quarters
Or even better drop by Warner Brothers Studio
And say hello to the legendary Harry Potter

Go up and view the whole city on London Eye
In a capsule on the world’s most famous Ferris wheel
Try popping a bottle of bubbly at The Ritz
Or shopping at Harrods and saying “what a neat deal”

    Admiring the general splendour
Of the view from The Shard
Or try peering up the tall black hats
Of the Buckingham Palace Royal guards

Walk into a red telephone box
And make an urgent phone call
Or take a stroll by the Big Ben
Stare and do nothing at all

Pay tribute to the cold and wet
    Harsh English weather
    Carry an enormous umbrella
Drink tea and wear a very warm sweater

With the knowledge and insight into
    The English way of life
One would wonder how come I haven’t been offered
As yet, the job of an English guide !

Many visits to this iconic city
Have only increased my love for it and how
The only thing left is to pack my bags
And shift there permanently right now

    Adventures of a bookworm

    I am a bookworm
    Both fat and round
    I’m leafy green in color
And live to put on more pounds

    Whenever I am hungry
The next door book I mount
    While the fans twirl noisily
No one hears the munching sound

    Everyday is an adventure
    Of grand planned tours
Of train trips and sinking ships
    Or of history galore!

Many a sob story I’ve eaten
    Many a broken heart defiled
    Several pages I have munched
Of stories of blood bonded ties!

    My favourite section is drama
Where the great sagas are stored
And I can hog to my heart’s content
    And make a hundred holes

    Physics, science and chemistry
    Are no fun for me
    Their glossy stiff pages
    Make a shabby meal

    Newsprints are more friendly
    To visit everyday I’m told
Apparently no one cares for them
If they get more than a day old!

    My lavish life of comfort
    Is one of endless possibilities
And my in between travelling is comfy
As I reside in the city library!

If you do ever spot me
    Kindly restrain a scream….
Remember to return the books on time
You could be reading my next meal !

I have loved shoes for as long as I can remember. They are the first things I notice in a person and the only things that make me really really happy . Needless to say I am the owner of several scores of shoes — heels, flats, strapped and everything in between ! Not only do they occupy the largest space in my closet , they have over the course of time , cost me a fortune . The look of them , the feel of them , the way they smell all have me enthralled. The minute I swipe my credit card I know , I have bought a gleaming piece of art and that makes me happy . If I had paid more attention to boys instead of the latest shoes in style , I would probably have a love life today to speak of on Valentine’s Day !

Please tread carefully - you are about to read about what has been the greatest love affair, however one sided , of my life .

I fell in love with you long ago
A love that’s lasted through space and time
Your leathery smell makes me weak at the knees
So does your leathery gleaming shine !
I love the way you make me feel tall
God knows I need that boost —
I love the way I feel when I have you on
For years under your spell I’ve lived seduced !
Your shiny belts and buckles combine
To make you a piece of art
The money I’ve spent in this lifetime on you,
No one would mistaken me for being smart !
Long has lived my one sided affair with you
Not that the difference you would ever know
So help me god and break this spell
Instead of shoes , help me find a beau !
