Read MoreWhen I first noticed the twigs and wood shavings stuck between a high window pane and the metal grille in front of it in our enclosed back veranda, I thought they had landed there after the recent storm, like the dried leaves lodged in the grille just below the asbestos roof.
But in a few days my family began to observe that the pile was growing bigger, until one day it took a shape like that of a nest. All this hardly took ten days, and before we knew it, there was a bird sitting in the cozy little space, which my parents confirmed was a bulbul.

वो कहते है तुम हत्यारे हो,
क्या कहूँ साहेब बेचारा हूँ !
वो कहते है तुम बेचारे हो,
क्या करु साहेब खुदी का मारा हूँ !
वो कहते है तुम खुदी के मारे हो,
साहेब गरीबी ने मारा !
वो कहते है 'गरीबी',
हमने तो मिलके खत्म कि थी,
नही होता यकीन साहेब के कानो को सुन के,
तोड़ा था कानून भी तो मारने साहेब के खून को,
क्या कातिल था, चुकता हिसाब करना चाहता था चुन के,
नज़र-नज़र का फेर है, इंसानियत ने छोड़ा मासूम से हुस्न को ।

चारो खाने चित्त हो रहे,
देख इँसा आचम्भित्त हो रहा ।
सम्मानित कबसे महसूस कर रहा,
शर्म कर ! सिमट गया औ' लज्जित हो रहा ।
(देख मौला लज्जित हो रहा)
या मौला! ले ले मेरी जान!
सुखे मुँह निकल चले,
पार करना रेगिस्तान,
कर हिम्मत,जुटा हौसला,
चला चार दिन का मेहमान ।
