The coin
It was a usual Thursday and I was in a hurry to reach college. Stopping at one of the ticket machines at Malad Station, I pulled out my card. With a tinkling sound, a 2 rupee coin stuck to the plastic cover of my card fell tinkling to the ground, a few spaces ahead from where I was standing. *Unorganized teenagers*
Afraid that I would have to get back in the line again, I decided to first print my ticket and then pick up the coin. As I filled in the details on the machine, a little girl in rags came to me, as if out of nowhere, begging for alms. Her younger brother came up behind her. He couldn't have been older than 4 years. I was in a real hurry and people behind me who were waiting for their turn were starting to grow impatient. So I ignored the girl and went about my task. That's when the girl noticed my coin lying in the corner.
Keeping an eye on it, she spread her hands in front of the man standing behind me. I couldn't help but notice her movements and was watching her closely now. She cast a glance around, to see if anyone was looking her way. Then with a swift move, she picked up the coin before my eyes and ran away. What amused me was that though she was openly begging for money, she hesitated before "stealing" a 2 rupeescoin. These are human values- dignity, self-worth. People earning in crores won't think twice before cheating someone, or taking bribes. *Or maybe that's why they are earning in crores* But this little girl, though she took the coin, didn't want to be seen stealing it.
It's also really interesting to see how something will always come to you if it's meant to be yours, it won't matter how. And something that isn't yours will go away, no matter how much you cling to it.
That coin was meant to be hers, she got it. I was meant to give it to her, it happened some or the other way. Musing, I walked briskly *almost ran* towards the platform, smiling to myself. The Churchgate train was arriving in 1 minute.
