NUAKHAI or NAVAKHAI is an agricultural festival mainly observed by people of Western Odisha and Southern Chhattisgarh in India. Nuakhai is observed to welcome the new rice of the season. It's a beautiful festival of Nature Worshipping and brotherhood. People enjoy this occasion with great pomp and gaiety dancing, singing and merrymaking. This is a time when we eat newly sprouted fresh Paddy after offering our deities wishing the wellbeing of the whole world forgetting mutual enemity. People working in distant lands come to village for Nuakhai. At the end of the day, we gather in a place bow heads (Juhar) before all elders to fetch their blessings and dance in the rhythms of brotherhood whole evening.
Today, I dedicate the piece to this great festival of Nuakhai and Happy Nuakhai Juhar to all.
O, Mother You warmly clad in verdant green Your tender paddy shrubs break waves in my feeding field in lush green! I hide and see you, Mother under the great acacia, half drenched, the mercy you implant in each plant to drive hunger away from every stupid stomach! Mother, You look more beautiful in Nuakhai.
O, Mother after a short rain I hear the trinket of your anklets when leaves shake in zephyr The sounds of bees, dragonflies and yellow butterflies remind me of happy tune from holy bassoon and the drums beaten to ask village deity in festive afternoon! Mother, I hear your merry songs in Nuakhai!
O, Mother I feel your touch in the dews on my rice fields every morn I touch to know 'How much milk have you poured- in each young paddy for a good harvest, this year!' I do discover your smooth mercy in all coarse leaves, Mother for a better year. Mother, I feel your touch of kindness in Nuakhai.
O, Mother the aroma of your benign presence, I sense in flowers, meadows and all around my village streets I could smell life in rocky hills I smell crops in mud to heal Fragrance in air, perfume in water mother, I smell your presence in Nuakhai.
O, Mother new food on leaves food for human and for beasts that I taste in Nuakhai!
