At my front door
A figure robed in blue
With a touch of ice
And a frown of fire
Plastered on each of the five heads.
Five heads?
Yes, five heads, and how peculiar were they!
One red, one white, one yellow, one orange, and one of piercing grey.
The eyes in each head, they were two
One melancholy, and one with a twinkle
One with a scowl, the other with a wink
And this strange apparition
Stood robed in blue
With a mouth of pink.
What art thou?
I asked.
(Forgive me Shakespeare, this moment of surprise reminded me of you.)
I am The Picture of You
Answered the strange figure
Strangling my question
But not the answer.
You see folks, this was a picture of everyone
It had visited me, for some strange reason.
The colours and the hue
Echoed of multitudes true.
This figure in ruby blue
Wanted to highlight the different personas
That all of us are
The red of passion, the white of peace,the yellow of happiness, the orange of tenderness and the grey of complexity.
I've got it!
I cried
We have to choose
Which personality we adopt, fair and true!
Ah no
Said the figure in blue
That's not true.
You are those personalities
And you must embrace
Both the light and shadow
The eagle and the snake
Then you will, a wonderful life make!
And now I understood
Why this figure had chosen me
I'm a poet,
And I must get this message out to thee!

You Never Got as Cold
You are a piece of art, stoic and stable
You tell yourself.
(Maybe even a little stale)
You will not allow yourself to be human
Because you know how broken human beings are
How the world tramples them
Like autumn leaves.
But sometimes, you cannot help it
And then your eyes remember that they are not painted
And weep.
Your nose remembers that it is not marble
And sniffs.
Your mouth remembers that it is not sculpted
And howls.
And from the fog,
Rises the vulnerability you buried.
You never got as cold
As you wanted to be.

Read MoreHow old were you when you realised that the world wasn't the safe place our elders pretended it was for our happiness?
How old were you when you realised that your parents weren't infallible, that they were as human as you and wouldn't always be able to protect you?
How old were you when you realised that death was a big deal, that not going on forever was a potential phobia?
How old were you when you realised that fear, that protecting mechanism, actually worked against you at times and crippled you in a way no disease could?
How old were you when you found out the difference between a human and an animal, then the crushing reality that humans were actually animals, that just being a human didn't guarantee humanity?
These are realizations that have struck us all at some point of time or the other, and are actually conscious nightmares.
They lead to existential crises. They sow the seed of worry. They eat away at your mind.
Yet, among all these fears, we still jump when we see a lizard. We still scream when someone jumps at us from behind a door (as a joke, of course, attackers are an entirely different matter). We know there are bigger things in the universe, but we still allow ourselves to let the small things matter.
And that is where our salvation lies. The crushing reality of life combated with its little joys. Life struggling against life, and yet still allowing us a few moments of happiness.
The dried rose in a book. The little goodnight kiss from your mother. The chilling warmth of memories. The laughter forgetting the pain. The good grade which won't matter ten years down the line, but gives you a day to remember, and realise the power of the mind, the way it knows how to record the most important things. A glass of water after a long, thirsty day. Those, and many uncountable things, make up the army with which we fight fear and nightmares.

I echo slowly
I repeat things when I can't remember them.
Like History.
There's power, there's prestige
But I have forgotten that there's pride, and tyranny, and an ultimate downfall.
And since I have forgotten these crucial parts,
I take the class again,
This time with me being the central character
Rather than Robespierre or Hitler.
They were only one
I am many
They were glib speakers
And I a silent screamer.
They ruled humans
I ride them.
But there's a similarity too
We believe ourselves to be unlikely heroes
Despite appearing as villains through and through.
