जब सारा शहर सोता है यह किताबें जागती हैं रात भर, ये अपना अस्तित्व ढूँढ़ती हैं, कभी तुम्हारी शेल्फ़ पर कभी तुम्हारे बस्ते में, तो कभी तुम्हारे सीने पर। वही अस्तित्व वही अस्मिता जो हमने एक अरसे पहले रद्दीयों के भाव बेच दी। अब तक तो फ़र्श से इनकी अभिलाषाओं से रिसते लहू की बूँदें भी साफ़ की जा चुकी हैं। दीवार से लगी वह बेबस बिस्तुइया उनकी किंकर्तव्यविमूढ़ता की साक्षी है।
बिसरी यादों को सहलाने के लिए इनके पास केवल अमलतास का वह सूखा हुआ फूल रह गया है इनके पन्नों के भीतर, जो गर्मी की एक शाम तुम्हारे महबूब ने इनकी कविताएं तुम्हें सुनाते हुए तुम्हारे ठीक कानों के पीछे खोंसा था। यह फूल बेजान हो चुका है और सुबह तुम्हारी आँख खुलने तक वे क़िताबें भी इस फूल की तरह तुम्हें पहले से ज़्यादा बेजान नजर आएंगी। मग़र वे बेजान नहीं हैं, वे बस थक चुकी हैं रात-भर की गई अपने अस्तित्व की खोज़ से।

और एक सत्य यह है कि मैं वह दीवार हूँ और तुम्हारी मुझसे मोहब्बत किसी दीवार पर सर पटकना।

ये सच है कि हर त्योहार पर बड़ों का आशीर्वाद लेते समय मेरा ध्यान उनके मेरे सर पर हाथ फेरे जाने से बिगड़ी और अस्तव्यस्त झुल्फों पर होता है। पीठ सीधे करते हुए मैं सबसे पहले अपनी झुल्फों को सुलझाती हूँ, कि न जाने कब किस वक़्त मेरा तुमसे सामना हो जाए। ये जानते हुए भी कि मैं तुम्हारे लिए हर रूप में ख़ूबसूरत हूँ। सुबह-सुबह उनींदी में बिखरे बालों में सुस्ताते हुए भी और तपती दुपहरियों में निरंतर जलते सूरज के तले घण्टों काम करते हुए पसीने से लथपथ चेहरे में भी।
तुम गुम्बदों के गोलार्द्ध पर मंडराते वो कबूतर हो जो दिनभर लंबी उड़ानों के बाद भी उसका दायरा नहीं छोड़ता, शाम ढले तुम लौट आते हो गुम्बद के किसी आले में अपने पंख पसारे। गुम्बद का वो आला मेरा हृदय है जो की तुम्हारा स्थायी पता है।

Thousands of leaves in a tree
still you were the one I plucked
wrecked apart ,
To be clear wasn't fond of you
assuming yourself young and pretty
you were easy to pick .
You wanted a life just like old crumbled leaf
wanted to make it till end ;
without knowing the significance of that pain of being alive.
to know it's value
destroying you once twice thrice and many more times
worth the realization
for god sake
You will rise
growing through that abrasion again.
Illusions you had before
gonna turn back around.

और वे अल्हड़ लड़कियाँ अक्सर
दौड़ते दौड़ते आगे निकल जाती हैं ज़िन्दगी से,

"सबसे अतुल्य अमूल्य हुआ करती थी साहब एक ज़माने में ये सोने की चिड़िया। लेकिन 'था' और 'थी' का कोई अस्तित्व नहीं होता। हुआ तो ये धरती भी सुनहरी करती थी और अम्बर नीला। लहू-लुहान पड़ी लाशों से धरती लाल और इनके जलते चिथड़ों से उठते धुँए से अम्बर काला हो चुका है।
इस चिड़िया का अस्तित्व भी ख़त्म हो जाएगा, इसके अपनों ने इसके पंख तोड़े है और आख़िर खंडित चीजों को कौन कब तक सहेज कर रखता है?"

सीने में क्रोध, क्रांति एक आग का भड़कना
उस क्षण कलम का ताप चरम सीमा पर होना
उसके ताप से मेरा बदन का यूँ जलना मानो नंगी पीठ को तपते रेगिस्तान में छोड़ आना
मेरे हृदय में अनायास ही प्रेम और संगीत का संगम उमड़ आना
मानो किसी आबशार का सिल के ऊपर से गुज़र जाना
किसी सजनी का अपने साजन के शाने पर टिक कर सो जाना
मेरी कलम का जल की निर्मल बूंदें बन, सजनी के रुख़सार से टकराना
मेरी कलम का दो अत्यंत विपरीत क्षणों में उठना

अठखेलियाँ करता एक बचपन समेट, सिंगारदान में छुपा आई हूँ मैं। जो कभी बाहर निकाल भी दूँ, ये लोकापवाद सा मेरी साड़ी में लिपट जाता है। रोशनदान से जो तकते हैं हसीं किस्से कल के, मेरे पर्दों पर एक संकीर्ण सोच आलंबन है इनके चलते। मेरी ड्योढ़ी की चौखट से झाँकता है बचपन मेरा, मैं कदम बढाऊँ तो पल्लू सा पकड़ लेता है आज मेरा।
एक तितली रंग छोड़ गई है मेरे हाथों पर अभी-अभी, मैं उसके संग उड़ना चाहती थी। तुम्हें मेरी ये पाज़ेब की खनक लुभाती है ना?उन पाज़ेब के ठीक नीचे अदृश्य रूढ़ि बेड़ियां है, वो तितली अक्सर इसीलिए मुझसे आगे निकल जाती है। उन बेड़ियों द्वारा हुई छीलन से रिसते रक्तपात पर अक्सर फिसल कर औंधे मुँह गिर जाती हूँ मैं।
मुझे उपहार में पंख नहीं चाहिए। क्या इस दफ़े तुम मुझे एक कटार भेंट करोगे?

रोशनी से भरे नूर को मैं आफ़ताब क्या करती
बिछड़ने का फैसला रज़ा-ए-बाहम न था,
पलट कर मैं फिर उनसे आदाब क्या करती
ये मुब्तिला रूह है मेरी जो तेरे जाने से,
भला जिस्म को मरहम, मैं जनाब क्या करती
नाबिनाई में ही गुज़री है एक उम्र हमारी,
फिर उस हक़ीक़त को मैं ख़्वाब क्या करती
उजालों से हलकान रहती थी जो अक्सर,

चाँद ढका अब माकड़ जालों ने
कहता था चाँदनी पर अकड़ता है
दरवाज़े खा गए दीमक मेरे घर के

सिलवटें ललाट पर पहरों रहती
अग्नि सदा हाथ पर पकड़ता है
अजीज़ ने रात घोंपा जो खंज़र
