    but the call didn't connect.
He looked at his phone: "NO SERVICE".
    "No service!?" he reacted,
    "impossible".

Scanning his surroundings, he saw that things weren't right. Things weren't the same at all.

Where was the usual warmth of midday that would beam from the smile of his sunny wife?

Why is there scattered, waxen ashes strewn across his coffee table - instead of the blissful lillies that gave life to the living room?

Looping questions plaguing his mind were
disrupted by a hissing, staticky sound, coming from the television - flickering with glitching images - alluring him, as he leaned in closer.

    "Rose?" he gulped.

Extending trembling fingertips towards its dusty glass, he gently wiped the television with his tattered jacket sleeve.

"Rose..." he repeats - as a breathtaking scene brought him to his knees.

His wide wistful eyes caught the reflection of autumn. He stared at trees of red, yellow and green, cocooning a stairway of stone, awash with tumbling rivers - waterfalls - that cascaded over smooth, balding cliffs, like thinning white strands of hair.

Then he remembered. It's all gone.
His sunshine. The lillies. His Rose.
    Gone.

And a sudden, angry flood of memories began flashing back with the blackened trauma of that fateful, forsaken night.

    reluctance

    if we fade
    i hope we fade
    like a summer day.

    Reluctance might ripple
    the twilight stricken sea -
    stippled with blood
    of the breaking sun -
    as it pleads
    with the day
    screaming 'wait!
    you're still young'.

    if we fade
    I hope we fade
    holding onto light

    long enough
    at least enough
    to warm
    that fateful night.
